Most "best campsites" lists rank by the wrong thing. They crown whichever site has the biggest water park or the best-known name, which helps little if what you want is a base for village markets, lavender and a slow evening by the pool.

This one starts with the judging, not the winner. Four criteria set the order. Placement first: how well each site sits for the real draws of Drôme Provençale, from Grignan and its château to the markets at Nyons and Dieulefit, the lavender that blooms from mid-June to mid-July and the truffle country of the Tricastin around Montélimar. Then what's on site when you don't feel like driving, how it holds up in high summer when lively tips into relentless, and honest placement, since a few strong sites sit just north of Drôme Provençale proper.
Eight sites, then. The ranking opens with the biggest name in the region and ends somewhere a lot quieter.
1. Les Bois du Châtelas (Yelloh! Village, Bourdeaux)
If you judge a campsite by its water, this one wins before the others lace their boots. Yelloh! Village's Les Bois du Châtelas has a full water park and an indoor pool for grey mornings, plus a spa area for the grown-ups, and the pitches look over the hills around Bourdeaux. The trade-off is placement: Bourdeaux sits well north, towards the Drôme valley, a long way from the lavender and the Provençal villages most people come for. It's a destination in its own right, and it brings the August noise of a big resort.
2. Flower Camping Les Truffières (Grignan)
Second, and it's close. Flower Camping Les Truffières is a three-star site on the edge of Grignan, built on an old truffle orchard, with around a hundred trees still shading the pitches, and guests rate it 4.4 out of 5.
Placement is its strength. You're about a kilometre from Grignan and its château, reachable on foot or by bike. The pool is heated, though only when the sun isn't doing the job, leaving the water cooler in a grey spell. There's a paddling pool, a kids' club, activities from laser tag to an escape game, and a producers' market and concerts in July and August. 3. Les Bastets (Marsanne)
Les Bastets sits on a hillside above Marsanne and earns its place on the views alone: wide and open rather than a glimpse between trees. Keep the map honest, though. Marsanne is north of Drôme Provençale rather than inside it, closer to the Drôme valley than to the lavender and markets further south. Build your week around Grignan and Nyons and you'll be driving to them daily. For space, quiet and a view over breakfast, it's hard to beat.
4. Les Terrasses Provençales (Venterol, near Nyons)
Four stars, a hillside and the word "peaceful" doing exactly what it says. Les Terrasses Provençales sits above Venterol, just outside Nyons, which puts you in the southern Drôme within easy reach of the town's market. The heated pool helps in the shoulder seasons, and the terraced layout keeps everything private. It isn't a site for children who need a waterslide and a disco. Travelling families might find it too still. Couples chasing the markets at Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine won't.

5. Flower Camping La Pinède (Die)
This one sits in a different Drôme altogether. Flower Camping La Pinède is in Die, up in the Diois, on the Drôme river rather than in the Provençal south. There's a pool complex for warm afternoons, but the pull is the water and the hills: canoeing on the river, then climbing and hiking in the surrounding country. If lavender fields and Provençal villages are the whole plan, this is a long way north of them. If you'd rather swim in a river and walk, this is a strong place to be.
6. Le Lac Bleu (Châtillon-en-Diois)
Le Lac Bleu does what it says on the gate. The four-star site gives direct access to a swimming lake at the foot of the Vercors, backed up by its own pool. In August a cool lake beats a chlorinated one, and you can walk from your pitch straight to the water. It's in Châtillon-en-Diois, so this is the Diois again, with cooler nights and a different kind of holiday. For a family after water, walking and mountain air, it's a fair swap for a coastal resort.
7. Domaine Le Sagittaire (Capfun, Vinsobres)
If the children are casting the votes, Domaine Le Sagittaire probably wins. It's a five-star Capfun resort at Vinsobres, with a large aquatic park and slides, and entertainment running from morning well into the evening. Vinsobres sits in the far south of the Drôme, near Vaison-la-Romaine, so the setting works. Be clear what you're buying, though: in peak season this is busy, not a quiet corner of the Drôme. Brilliant for a high-energy week, tiring if you wanted stillness.
8. Les Ramières (Sahune)
Last, and the most understated of the eight. Les Ramières sits on the Eygues river at Sahune, at the gateway to the Baronnies, with a water area for cooling off in the heat. Sahune is quieter and further from the big-name sights, so you'll want a car for Nyons, the markets and the lavender. Camp beside a river, fall asleep to the sound of water and walk into the Baronnies, and it earns its spot.
The verdict
Between a big-resort week and a Provençal-village week, the right answer depends on who's in the car. For water-obsessed children, Les Bois du Châtelas is the safe bet. With Grignan, the markets and the lavender on your doorstep, Les Truffières is the better base. For a calmer summer, I'd look at Les Terrasses Provençales or the riverside sites at Sahune and Châtillon. And if water is the whole point, Le Lac Bleu and La Pinède do that part best.
